Essential Skills for the AI Era is a panel discussion examining how artificial intelligence is reshaping learning—and what skills students and adults alike need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Moderated by Garrett Smiley, Founder of Sora Schools, the conversation brings together Nate Kerr of the Rithm Project and Julia Freeland Fisher, Director of Education Research at the Clayton Christensen Institute.

Together, the panelists will explore the enduring importance of human connection, critical thinking, and adaptability in an AI-driven future, alongside emerging opportunities and key ethical considerations. The session will conclude with a 15-minute live Q&A, giving participants the chance to engage directly with the speakers.

Speaker Bios

Garrett Smiley – Sora Schools

Garrett Smiley is the founder of Sora Schools, a fully accredited online school serving 6th–12th graders with a unique, personalized approach to education. Sora’s project-based learning model is built around innovation and interdisciplinary studies, offering students the freedom to explore their passions in a flexible and self-directed environment. Garrett is committed to breaking traditional education molds and fostering a learning experience that prepares students for the dynamic, fast-paced world of tomorrow.

Julia Freeland Fisher – Clayton Christensen Institute

Julia Freeland Fisher is the director of education research at the Clayton Christensen Institute, a nonprofit nonpartisan think tank that studies innovation across the public and social sector. She is author of the book Who You Know: Unlocking Innovations that Expand Students’ Networks. She's currently researching the impact that AI companions could have on young people's social connectedness. Julia holds a BA from Princeton University and a JD from Yale Law School. 

Nate Kerr – The Rithm Project

Nate is an educator and systems innovator dedicated to helping the next generation thrive in a tech-driven world. With 20 years of experience primarily at Teach For America and City Year, his work focuses on scaling learning models that prioritize human-centered research. Currently leading youth partnerships at The Rithm Project, Nate empowers young people to maintain their agency, discernment, and social-emotional well-being as technology evolves. Based in Denver, Nate balances his work with plenty of outdoor time alongside his wife and two sons.
