Introduction

What do protest songs, streetwear, and sneakers have to do with American history? Everything.

In Pop History, you’ll explore how music and fashion have always been more than style — they’ve been powerful tools for change. From Motown to hip-hop, from bell bottoms to Black Lives Matter tees, you’ll learn how artists and activists used culture to speak up, stand out, and start movements. Then, you’ll create your own. In Pop History, we’ll trace the beat of 20th-century America by studying the fashion and music that defined each era — and the activism that powered it. From jazz clubs and protest marches to punk shows and TikTok trends, you’ll see how people used creative expression to fight for rights, tell their stories, and spark change. You’ll dig into nonfiction, fiction, and real historical movements — then make your own music, designs, and campaigns that reflect the lessons of the past. This class builds your research and presentation skills while giving you the tools to make your voice heard — in style. This expedition will have reading requirements.
