What Are Mastery Rubrics?

By Sora Schools

At Sora, we use mastery-based assessment. At the end of a learning experience, Sora students are awarded a zero to four score on each "Unit" and "Ability" based on their demonstrated mastery of the material. Crucially, scores are not final until graduation, so students can always try again. This way, students can “overwrite” poor performances and practice a growth mindset.

Mastery Rubrics have been developed for both Middle School and High School.

Middle School Mastery Rubrics

Unit Mastery Level represents the progress your student has made on the Unit. Reaching Mastery Level 1 provides students with foundational knowledge to help them know where to dive deeper based on interests. Higher levels of mastery in the Unit are evidence that the student has demonstrated mastery of the Unit. Students can revisit a Unit to gain higher mastery levels at any time during their Sora Journey.

Abilities that appear on Middle School mastery rubrics include:

  • Creativity
  • Curiosity
  • Agency
  • Effective Communication
  • Empathy
  • Self-Awareness
  • Truth-Seeking

High School Mastery Rubrics

Students can revisit a Unit to gain higher mastery levels at any time during their Sora Journey.
